On My Own, Inc. provides systems advocacy in regard to public policy issues.
Public policy issues include, but are not limited to the following; equal opportunity housing, transportation, employment
and access to community activities and public services. The ADA and section 504 provide much of the basis for our work in
individual and systems advocacy.
Adaptive
Telephones and Adaptive Internet Software Programs:
On My Own, Inc. serves as an administrator for the TAP for Telephone (Telecommunications Access Program) and
TAP for Internet programs in the State of Missouri. TAP for Telephone provides for seven categories of adaptive equipment,
for hearing, sight, mobility and multiple disabilities. This equipment is provided free of charge. You must be a Missouri
resident; you must have phone service in your home; and you must have a certified disability that prevents you from using
basic telephone equipment. Your annual adjusted income must not exceed $60,000.00 for a 1 to 2-person household. TAP-I provides
adaptive computer software for persons with computers who need assistance to use the Internet. Training is provided by TAP-I.
TAP-I uses the same financial guidelines.
Air Conditioner Loan Program:
This program is available to persons with a disability and medical condition
that requires air conditioning. A Doctor's statement prescribing the need for air conditioning is required along with a $50
deposit for the unit. Depositis must be made with a check or money order, which will be refunded when the unit is returned
in good clean working condition. The loan is for the duration of the summer season.
Disaster Response Teams:
The impact of the tornados that tore through the On My Own, Inc. service area in the spring of 2003 and again
in the spring of 2006 are a tragic reminder of our responsibility to respond to our consumers during and after any type of
emergency situation. As a result On My Own, Inc. is participating with county and city officials in each of our communities
to become a partner in their disaster response units. Detailed driving directions and vital information about special needs
of the disabled consumers will be stored in a database to hasten response time.
